Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?
Author: Martin, Bill Jr.
Illustrator: Carle, Eric
Publisher: Henry Holt and Co., 2007
Plot summary: A big happy frog, a plump purple cat, a handsome blue horse, and a soft yellow duck--all parade across the pages of this delightful book. Children will immediately respond to Eric Carle's flat, boldly colored collages. Combined with Bill Martin's singsong text, they create unforgettable images of these endearing animals.
Recommended audience: Grade K and above
Illustrations: collage style made from tissue paper
Activities: One activity would be to have the students make their own page for a classroom story like this book. Students can color the pages and write a sentence about what they see. Then the teacher could place all of the pages together and copy them to create a book for each person in their class. This would be especially cute in the lower elementary grades.
A second activity that could be done with this book is to get all different colors of tissue paper and have students make a collage much like Carle did in his illustrations for this book.

Bartholomew and the Oobleck
Author: Dr. Seuss
Illustrator: Dr. Seuss
Publisher: Random House Books for Young Readers, 1949
Plot summary: An ooey-gooey, green oobleck was not exactly what the king had in mind when he ordered something extra-special from his royal magicians.
Recommended audience: Grade K and above
Illustrations: watercolor
Activities: One activity that I would do is tie in Science with this book and as a class make Oobleck. Also you could tie in weather along with the viscosity of a substance and talk about how something can be both a solid and a liquid at the same time. Another activity would be to pretend you were one of the characters in the book and write about what you thought about the oobleck falling from the sky. I think it would be very interesting from the point of view of a young child.

Horton Hears A Who!
Author: Dr. Seuss
Illustrator: Dr. Seuss
Publisher: Random House Books for Young Readers, 1954
Plot summary: Horton, the lovable elephant, tries to protect tiny creatures on a speck of dust. An easy reader with delightful verse and pictures.
Recommended audience: Grade K and above
Illustrations: pen and ink
Activities: One activity would be to have students split up into groups and role play as different characters from the book. Students would love to be different characters and this would give them a great opportunity to talk to each other while working on skills such as speaking aloud and reading.
Another great activity would be to have students write a story just as Dr. Seuss did. This would work on their skills with rhyming words. This could be done around Dr. Seuss' birthday.

The Lorax
Author: Dr. Seuss
Illustrator: Dr. Seuss
Publisher: Random House Books for Young Readers, 1971
Plot summary: "Unless someone like you...cares a whole awful lot...nothing is going to get better...It's not."
Long before saving the earth became a global concern, Dr. Seuss, speaking through his character the Lorax, warned against mindless progress and the danger it posed to the earth's natural beauty.
"The big, colorful pictures and the fun images, word plays and rhymes make this an amusing exposition of the ecology crisis."--School Library Journal.
Recommended audience: Grade 2 and above
Illustrations: watercolor
Activities: My first activity would be to talk about pollution and why it is so important to keep our earth nice and clean. This is talked about a lot in The Lorax. A second activity would be to have my students compare and contrast the movie and the book with each other.
