Over and Under the Snow
![Picture](/uploads/1/3/6/5/13650558/8042108.jpg)
Author: Messner, Kate
Illustrator: Neal, Christopher Silas
Publisher: Chronicle Books, 2011
Plot summary: This story is set in the Winter time when there is snow on the ground. The main character is a young girl and her father and they are watching for signs of animals. Her father shows the young girl different signs of what lies below the snow in this "secret kingdom".
Recommended audience: Elementary School
Illustrations: Beautifully drawn illustrations! The type of Illustrations look to be a collage type of illustration with the layer look of the dimensions.
Activities: One activity that could be done with this lesson is to have students create an ecosystem and include animals that may live under th surface as the author and illustrator did in this book.
A second activity that would be awesome to have students do is research different types of animals that live in the ocean under the water and have each of the students create their own version of this book but have them talk about the animals under the water in the ocean.

![Picture](/uploads/1/3/6/5/13650558/1203140.png)
Author: Melissa Sweet
Illustrator: N/A
Publisher: Houghotn Mifflin Harcourt, 2011
Plot summary: This story follows Tony Sarg who is a puppeteer who is interested in how everything moves and works. Tony Sarg invented the mechanics of the balloons for the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
Recommended audience: This would be appropriate for upper elementary students or even Middle school students
Illustrations: Combination of collage and design illustrations
Activities: One activity that would be great for upper elementary school students or middle schoo science students would be to have them create a "float" or a balloon as Tony Sarg did.
Another activity that would be great for students would be to have them create a simple machine using the materials provided by the teacher. This would tie in with their science standards.
